Zoom Communications (ZM) — Post Q1 FY27 Re-Valuation
But 10% Post-Print Rally Compresses Asymmetric Setup
1. Bottom Line
Q1 FY27 was a clean, broad-based beat-and-raise across every line that matters: revenue, margin, AI monetization metrics, and net dollar expansion. The print directly validated bull-thesis components I had previously weighted as low-probability — particularly the NDR inflection (now 99%) and AI Companion paid monetization (+184% YoY). Strategic Investments now carry on the balance sheet at $1,876M fair-value mark, providing an observed anchor (no longer an estimate) for the Anthropic stake.
However, the stock's +10% post-earnings rally from $88 to $96.60 has priced in most of these positives. Probability-weighted fair value of $87.76 now implies −9.2% downside versus the current price. The asymmetric setup that defined the long thesis at $82–88 has compressed. Recommendation moves to Hold / Trim, with re-entry interest below $85.
Key shifts vs prior valuation
- Share price: $88.00 → $96.60 (+9.8% post-print)
- FY27 revenue guidance: $5,070M → $5,085M (raised)
- FY27 non-GAAP EPS guide: $5.79 → $5.98 (+3.3%, meaningful)
- Strategic Investments BS mark: $1,579M (Jan) → $1,876M (Apr) — now an observed datapoint
- Implied Anthropic ownership from BS: ~0.50% (vs my prior 0.65% estimate — moderately heavier dilution)
- Implied perpetual growth in price: 4.91% — now above nominal GDP

3. Strategic Investments — Now on the Balance Sheet
The most analytically important new data point: ZM's Q1 FY27 10-Q discloses Strategic Investments at $1,876.4M carrying value (fair value mark), up from $1,578.6M at FYE26. The Q/Q bridge:
| Strategic Investments Bridge | $M | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Carrying value, 1/31/26 | 1,578.6 | FY26 10-K balance sheet |
| + Purchases of strategic investments | 145.7 | Q1 FY27 cash flow statement |
| + Net unrealized gain (mark to fair value) | 152.3 | Q1 income statement |
| = Carrying value, 4/30/26 | 1,876.4 | Q1 FY27 10-Q balance sheet |
Per Baird (Jan '26 note), the vast majority of ZM Ventures is the Anthropic stake. This makes the $1.876B essentially an observed Anthropic mark, not a model estimate.
Implied Anthropic Ownership
| Calculation | Value |
|---|---|
| Strategic Investments carrying value | $1,876M |
| Less: Other ZM Ventures investments (BrightHire et al., est. 5%) | ($94M) |
| Implied Anthropic stake value | $1,782M |
| ÷ Anthropic Series G post-money | $380,000M |
| Implied ZM ownership (gross, no discount applied) | 0.47% |
| With 15% illiquidity discount embedded in fair value mark | 0.55% |
Implication
The observed BS mark implies ZM owns ~0.50% of Anthropic — below my prior 0.65% estimate. This is consistent with heavier dilution through Amazon convertibles, employee tender offers, and option pool refreshes than I had modeled. Going forward, the BS mark is the cleanest anchor; my own modeling becomes the cross-check rather than the primary estimate.
4. Updated Valuation — SOTP
4.1 Sum-of-the-Parts Build

−9.2% downside vs $96.60
4.2 Reverse DCF — Market Now Pricing in Real Growth
At $96.60, the market has caught up to the AI monetization narrative. Decomposing the price:
| Decomposition | $M | Per Share |
|---|---|---|
| Market cap @ $96.60 × 294.44M shares | 28,443 | $96.60 |
| Less: Net cash & marketable securities | (7,721) | ($26.22) |
| Less: Anthropic stake (BS mark) | (1,877) | ($6.38) |
| Implied core business EV | 18,845 | $64.00 |
| Implied Multiples on Core Business | Value | Read |
|---|---|---|
| Core EV / FY27E Revenue | 3.71x | Up from 2.75x at $82 |
| Core EV / FY27E Non-GAAP Op Income | 9.11x | Fair for 41% margin biz |
| Core EV / FY26 Owner FCF | 16.2x | 6.2% FCF yield |
| Implied perpetual growth (Gordon @ 9.91% WACC) | 4.91% | Above nominal GDP |
At $82, the market was pricing ZM as a melting ice cube (2.3% perpetual growth). At $96.60, it's pricing real, AI-driven growth approaching 5% in perpetuity. The free option on Anthropic and the cash floor are no longer free.
5. Transcript Signals & Strategic Read-Through
Russell Dicker hired as Chief Product Officer
25+ years across Microsoft, Google, Amazon. Previously led Microsoft Teams product and data science teams. This is a deliberate strategic hire — putting a Teams veteran on the org to compete against Teams head-on.
10/10 top ZCX deals were channel-driven
"From go-to-market side, it is already scalable. Our channel partners know how to pitch our story." — Eric Yuan. Channel scaling matters because it lowers ZM's incremental sales cost and accelerates time-to-close.
UC + CC cross-sell working
4 of top 10 ZCX deals also included Phone. 4 of top 10 Phone deals also included ZCX. The platform consolidation story is showing up in actual deal data, not just narrative.
Custom AI Companion: real monetization layer
Raymond James expanded to ~10,000 seats with tailored AI workflows in Q1. MongoDB upgraded to Custom AI for IT ticketing + CRM workflows. Custom AI Companion is a $12/user/month add-on — a genuine new pricing tier.
Boomerang deal: government customer
"7-figure ARR deal" — a major government contractor came back for full Zoom Workplace + Phone + Events + Webinars, displacing Teams + Cisco Calling. Reliability/security positioning is winning in regulated verticals.
Zoom Phone surpassed 10M paid seats (FY26 disclosure)
Baptist Health: 16,000-employee deployment win this quarter, 7-figure ARR. Mid-teens Phone ARR growth continuing. Phone is becoming the second platform pillar after core meetings.
⚠ AI cost spike acknowledged
CFO Michelle Chang: "as the AI costs spike in a good way with usage, we have got offsetting measures." This is the first explicit acknowledgment that AI consumption is meaningfully impacting COGS. Watch gross margin trend over next 2-3 quarters.
⚠ Q2-Q4 implies deceleration
Q1 grew 5.5%, but FY27 guide of 4.4% implies Q2-Q4 averages ~4.0%. FX provided a tailwind in Q1 (revenue in constant currency only grew 4.6%). If FX reverses, the optical growth deceleration looks worse.
"In the AI era, with the AI technology, [the task] becomes 1 step. Zoom interface will remain the same. But after Zoom conversations or work, my agent will automatically get the work done for me... I cannot imagine your agent and my agent talk with each other. We are not gonna use Zoom. It never worked in my view. So that is why Zoom calls become more important in the AI era." — Eric Yuan, Q1 FY27 earnings call. The "system of action" thesis explicitly framed: AI does not displace conversation; it adds an action layer on top.
6. Thesis Update — Confirmed vs Disconfirmed
- ✓ CONFIRMED: Revenue growth +5.5% — best in 3+ years. Enterprise +7.2% accelerating. Bull-case revenue path becomes more credible.
- ✓ CONFIRMED: NDR inflected to 99% (from 98% YoY). This is the cleanest signal of platform expansion working. Prior thesis assumed this might inflect; it has.
- ✓ CONFIRMED: AI Companion paid MAUs +184% YoY. Custom AI Companion landing in Raymond James, MongoDB — real enterprise adoption.
- ✓ CONFIRMED: Margin came in at 41.1% (vs 40% guide). Operating leverage intact despite AI investment.
- ✓ CONFIRMED: $1B incremental buyback (now $1.6B authorized). Capital return ramping aggressively.
- ✓ CONFIRMED: ZCX competitive displacement working — 8 of top 10 deals displacing legacy CCaaS vendors.
- ⚠ MIXED: Online churn ticked up to 3.0% from 2.8%. Mgmt called it nominal; watch trend over next 2 quarters.
- ⚠ MIXED: Strategic Investments BS mark ($1.876B) implies ~0.50% Anthropic ownership — below my prior 0.65% estimate. Heavier dilution than modeled.
- ✗ NEGATIVE: Stock now $96.60 (+10% post-print). Most of the asymmetric setup compressed. Risk/reward roughly symmetric now.
- ✗ NEGATIVE: AI cost commentary signals potential gross margin headwind. Long-term 80% gross margin target may face pressure.
7. Position Sizing & Action Plan
| Position | Action | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Existing long stock | Trim 30–50% at $96.60 | Re-buy on pullback to $85 or below. Margin of safety gone at current price. |
| Long calls (Jan '27 $85) | Take profits — likely +50–80% post-earnings | Time decay accelerates over next 6 months. Roll to Jan '28 $100 if maintaining exposure. |
| Long calls (Jan '28 $100) | Hold | Still has Anthropic IPO optionality, 18 months to expiry. OTM but reasonable theta. |
| New positions | Wait | No margin of safety. Be patient for a $85 re-entry zone. |
Triggers to Re-Engage
Move BACK TO BUY if:
- Pullback to $85 or lower (restores prob-weighted FV upside ~+5%)
- Anthropic IPO filing announcement (unlocks +$10–20/share)
- Q2 FY27 NDR moves to 100%+ (would justify bull case as new base)
- Anthropic raises new round at $600B+ (would re-mark stake materially higher)
Move to SELL / SHORT if:
- Online churn breaks above 3.2% (signals SMB weakness)
- Microsoft cuts Teams Copilot price below ZM AI tier
- Q2 FY27 gross margin compresses 100+ bps (AI cost validation)
- Strategic Investments mark stays flat next quarter despite Anthropic re-rate (would suggest stake smaller than estimated)
8. Sensitivity & Risk Framework
Anthropic Stake Sensitivity (Base DCF held constant)
| Anthropic Stake Value | Trigger | FV/share | Upside vs $96.60 |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0 (write-off) | Anthropic fails / regulatory shutdown | $80.69 | −16.5% |
| $1.0B | Markdown to early-2024 levels | $84.05 | −13.0% |
| $1.88B (current BS mark) | Status quo | $86.87 | −10.1% |
| $3.0B | Next round at $500–600B | $90.71 | −6.1% |
| $5.0B | Next round at $800B+ | $97.30 | +0.7% |
| $6.5B | Anthropic IPO at $700B | $102.24 | +5.8% |
| $10.0B | Anthropic IPO at $1T+ | $113.76 | +17.8% |
Even an Anthropic IPO at ~$700B valuation only justifies +5.8% upside from current levels. The Anthropic option has been largely priced in.
9. Conclusion
Q1 FY27 was the kind of print every long shareholder wants to see: clean beat, raised guidance, accelerating KPIs, and confirmation of the AI-monetization-plus-platform-expansion narrative. Eric Yuan's framing of Zoom as the "context layer" beneath agent-driven work is intellectually coherent and the early data (AI Companion paid MAUs +184%, MyNotes 1.5M MAUs in four months) supports it.
But valuation is the discipline. A stock that runs +10% on a 1.4% revenue beat and a 3.3% EPS guide raise is pricing in considerably more than the report itself delivered. At $96.60, the implied perpetual growth rate (4.91%) is above nominal GDP. That can be justified if you believe Zoom truly becomes an AI platform leader — but it's no longer the cheap free option it was at $82.
The trade was identifying ZM as an asymmetric setup at $82. The discipline is recognizing that the asymmetry has run its course at $96.60. Take some chips off, watch the triggers, wait for a better re-entry.
