TRX Gold (TRX): Priced Like Perseus, Owns 55% of One Mine — Oct 2026 Valuation
Verdict
On a look-through basis TRX trades like Perseus Mining, a 450 koz multi-asset producer. TRX is a single asset producing about 30 koz a year, and it owns only 55% of it. Working backwards from the share price, the market is assuming long-term gold of about $4,600/oz, above the $4,194 spot price on Oct 11.
The operating story is real: record throughput, higher recoveries, a 3,500 tpd mill under contract, and a possible move to a standard Tanzanian ownership split. The price already assumes most of that goes right.

Operating context
- Expansion: a new 3,500 tpd SAG/ball mill was contracted early in Q4 FY26, with completion in 12-18 months. It runs alongside the upgraded 2,000 tpd plant. Total programme about $45-50M, funded mainly from cash flow.
- Recovery: testwork shows 89-92%, above the 88% assumed in the PEA. Q3 plant recovery was 84.9%.
- Mine plan: management says the updated plan could support about 80-100 koz a year. Open-pit life may extend to about five years before underground starts.
- Updated PEA: targeted for year-end 2026, possibly slipping into early 2027.
- Ownership talks: discussions with the government are advanced. Management cited other Tanzanian frameworks of 80/20 or 84/16 with a non-dilutable state interest.
- Stockpile: about 19,373 oz of contained gold in the ROM stockpile (company estimate about $89M). These ounces are part of the production profile, not extra value.
Method
Primary method is a mine-life DCF on 100% of Buckreef cash flows. TRX's equity is its share of that NPV plus net cash, less the present value of parent G&A. Parent G&A is $8M a year and includes SBC treated as a cash cost. The PEA's own NPV uses a 5% discount rate, which is too low for a single-asset Tanzanian producer.
| Discount-rate build | Value |
|---|---|
| Risk-free (US 10Y) | 5.22% |
| Beta (gold miners, unlevered; net cash) | 1.0 |
| Equity risk premium | 4.5% |
| Tanzania country risk premium | 5.0% (bear 6.5%, bull 4.0%) |
| Cost of capital, base | 14.7% |
The 14.7% sits above the 7-12% sanity band, but that band applies to US net-cash companies. The gap here is the Tanzania country risk premium, not an input error.
Other assumptions: royalty and selling costs 7.3% of revenue (PEA), corporate tax 30%, sustaining capex $260/oz, closure cost $13.4M (PEA). Growth capex is $45M in FY27, $25M in FY28, $15M in FY29, then $30M a year over FY30-32 for underground development.
DCF scenarios
| Scenario | Weight | Gold deck (FY27 / FY28 / LT) | Plateau | Cash cost ex-royalty | Buckreef NPV (100%) | Value / share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bear | 25% | $3,700 / $3,200 / $2,700 | 70 koz, one-year slip | $1,450 | $109M | $0.07 |
| Base | 45% | $4,000 / $3,700 / $3,400 | 80 koz | $1,300 | $434M | $0.60 |
| Bull | 15% | $4,200 flat | 100 koz | $1,250 | $879M | $1.34 |
| JV reset to 84% | 15% | Base | 80 koz | $1,300 | $434M | $1.01 |
| PWFV | $0.64 |
Production profiles (koz a year, from FY27): base 32, 60, then 80 for 12 years and a 50 koz tail, about 1.2 Moz life-of-mine against 1.1 Moz in the PEA. Bull reaches 100 koz a year and about 1.48 Moz. Bear slips a year to a 70 koz plateau and about 0.95 Moz.
The fourth scenario is the order-book-style narrative shift: base economics, but TRX's share rises to 84% under a standard Tanzanian framework.
Sensitivity: base operations, gold held flat
| Gold (flat) | 55% owned, 14.7% | 84% owned, 14.7% | 55% owned, 12.7% | 84% owned, 12.7% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $3,000 | $0.37 | $0.65 | $0.42 | $0.74 |
| $3,400 | $0.57 | $0.95 | $0.64 | $1.07 |
| $3,800 | $0.77 | $1.26 | $0.86 | $1.41 |
| $4,194 (spot) | $0.96 | $1.55 | $1.08 | $1.74 |
| $4,600 | $1.16 | $1.86 | $1.30 | $2.08 |
At 55% ownership, $1.17 is only fair if gold stays above spot for the whole mine life. A JV reset is the only path that clears the price at a reasonable gold deck.
Reverse DCF: with base operations, 55% ownership and a 14.7% cost of capital, the market price implies long-term gold of about $4,600/oz.
Peer-relative valuation
To compare like for like, TRX's EV is grossed up for STAMICO's 45%: $383M / 0.55 less $21M net cash gives about $675M. That puts it on the same 100% basis as consolidated EBITDA and resources. There is no listed Tanzania-focused gold producer to use as a direct comp.
| Company | EV/EBITDA (LTM) | EV / resource oz | EV / production oz | Production (koz) | Jurisdiction / note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TRX (look-through) | 10.1x (4.6x on FY29E) | $417 | $22.8k now; $8.4k at 80 koz | 30, growing to 80-100 | Tanzania, 45% state JV |
| Galiano (GAU) | 2.4x | $122 | $3,850 | 150 | Ghana, single open pit, no debt |
| Caledonia (CMCL) | about 3.0x adj. | about $150 | $5,470 | 74 | Zimbabwe, single asset |
| Serabi (SRB.L) | about 2.4x | about $134 | about $3,420 | 55 | Brazil, small underground |
| Thor (THX.V) | about 1.5x | n/a | $4,810 | 80 | Nigeria, depleting pit |
| Orezone (ORE.TO) | about 5.2x | $202 | $6,930 | 235 | Burkina Faso and Quebec |
| Perseus (PRU.AX) | 6.2x | $392 | $11,490 | 450 | Multi-asset; building Nyanzaga in Tanzania |
| Median ex-Perseus | 2.4x | $142 | $4,810 |
Caledonia's reported EBITDA includes derivative gains; the adjusted figure is shown. Perseus is treated as the ceiling of the range, not a direct comp. Allied Gold was dropped because Zijin agreed to buy it in January 2026. That deal, a Chinese buyer paying a 27% premium for African gold, is a precedent for a possible takeout.
| Peer-implied method | EV (100%) | Value / share |
|---|---|---|
| Median EV/EBITDA on LTM EBITDA ex-SBC | $147M | $0.28 |
| Median EV/EBITDA on FY29 run-rate, discounted | $252M | $0.46 |
| Perseus 6.2x on FY29 run-rate, discounted | $652M | $1.13 |
| Median EV per resource oz | $230M | $0.42 |
| Perseus EV per resource oz | $634M | $1.10 |
| Median EV per production oz at 80 koz, discounted | $273M | $0.49 |
| Central comps value (median of methods) | $0.48 |
Consistency gate: PASS. PWFV $0.64 against comps at $0.48 is a 1.35x gap, inside the 2x limit. TRX only reaches its current price on Perseus-level multiples, which suits a diversified producer with no 45% state partner.
Change from the Oct 10 batch run
The Oct 10 ten-name screen put TRX at $1.24 (FAIR) and flagged it as failing the consistency gate. That figure applied a 0.40-0.70x risk multiple to the PEA's NPV at a 5% discount rate.
This version replaces it with a mine-life DCF at a 14.7% cost of capital and a fading gold deck. The method change explains the move to $0.64, and the stock now passes the gate.
Pricing section: why AVOID rather than SELL
- Rule: no SELL on a net-cash company growing above 15% without a named, dated negative catalyst. TRX is net cash and grew production 57% in FY26.
- Catalysts are all positive: Q4 FY26 results on Oct 14 before the open (likely another record), the updated PEA around year-end, and the JV restructuring.
- Momentum: up about 51% since the July 15 results.
- Short interest: 0.65% of shares outstanding, about 0.7 days to cover.
- Street: 3 analysts, average target $2.36.
- Ownership: insiders about 2.7%, institutions about 6.3%. Warrants were cleared in Q2 FY26 (about $21M exercised), so the capital structure is clean.
Not modeled (upside)
- Priority repayment of TRX's shareholder loans ahead of STAMICO dividends, which lifts TRX's effective economic share above 55% during payback.
- Ounce growth beyond the current resource from Stamford Bridge, Anfield and Eastern Porphyry drilling.
- A takeout premium in the style of Allied/Zijin.
Triggers
| Type | Trigger | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade | JV moves to 80/20 or better | Value rises toward $1.00-1.55 on base to spot gold |
| Upgrade | Updated PEA shows more than 1.5 Moz recoverable at 90 koz a year or more | Bull case weight rises |
| Thesis break | Gold below $3,500 sustained | Base falls toward $0.57 or lower |
| Thesis break | New mill slips past mid-2028, or Tanzania renegotiation turns adverse | Bear weight rises |
| Re-run | Q4 FY26 print (Oct 14) and the updated PEA | Versioned V2 if price diverges more than 50% |
