SIMO Valuation — Post Q1'26 Print
Recommendation: AVOID / Trim if held 12M Price Target: $145 Current Price: $234.52 (May 1, 2026) | Market Cap: $7.97B | Net Cash: $211M | EV: ~$7.76B
1. The Setup
Pure-play NAND flash controller fabless. Asset-light, no debt, dividend-paying ($0.50/ADS quarterly). Q1'26 print (April 28) was real — driven by embedded eMMC/UFS, PCIe Gen5 SSD controllers, and early MonTitan (SM8366) enterprise SSD ramp.
Q1'26 Results:
- Revenue: $342.1M (+105% YoY, +23% QoQ)
- GAAP EPS: $1.97 | Non-GAAP EPS: $1.58
- Both metrics massive beats vs consensus ($299.6M / $1.28)
Q2'26 Guidance: $393–411M (+15–20% QoQ, +98–107% YoY), non-GAAP OM 21–22% FY26 outlook: Management targets $1B+ run-rate by year-end; MonTitan to reach 5–10% of revenue Stock action: $116 (Apr 6) → $234 (May 1) = +101% in 25 days
The question isn't whether the business is good. It's whether $234 is justified.
2. WACC Derivation
| Input | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Risk-free rate | 4.20% | 10Y UST |
| Damodaran ERP | 4.75% | Implied ERP, Jan 2026 |
| Industry unlevered β (Semis) | 1.60 | Damodaran semis |
| D/E | 0% | No debt |
| Levered β | 1.60 | Same as unlevered |
| Cost of Equity = WACC | 11.80% | rounded to 11.0% in base |
Yahoo's 5Y monthly β of 1.08 supports a slightly lower discount rate, but Damodaran semi β is the right anchor for a fabless cyclical.
3. Three-Scenario DCF (FY26–FY30, TGR 3%)
Base (50% weight): 2026 $1.65B → 2030 $2.95B, OM 21–23%, MonTitan ramps as guided Bull (25% weight): AI optical/datacenter SSD wave continues, 2030 $3.8B, OM 24–25% Bear (25% weight): NAND cycle peaks 2026, smartphone weakness compounds, 2027 declines, OM compresses to 14–16%
| Scenario | 2026E Rev | 2030E Rev | 2030E OM | PV FCF | PV TV | EV | Equity | $/ADS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bull | $1.75B | $3.80B | 24% | $1,570M | $4,772M | $6,342M | $6,553M | $195 |
| Base | $1.65B | $2.95B | 22% | $1,232M | $3,359M | $4,591M | $4,802M | $143 |
| Bear | $1.50B | $1.75B | 16% | $520M | $1,250M | $1,770M | $1,981M | $59 |
Probability-weighted fair value: $135/ADS Downside vs. current $234: -42%
FCF reflects SBC as a real expense (Q1 SBC $8.4M annualizes to ~$36M, or 2.2% of revenue — best-in-class discipline; far better than ADBE 8.2% or FIG 36.3%). Working capital growth at 8% of incremental revenue.
4. Reverse DCF — What's Priced In
To justify $234/ADS at WACC 11%, TGR 3%:
- Required terminal-year FCF: ~$900M
- At 22% OM and 19% tax, that implies 2030 revenue of ~$5.0B
- This is a 5.7x expansion from 2025's $886M in 5 years (CAGR 41%)
For context: Phison, the larger NAND controller peer, took a decade to reach $2B revenue with strong tailwinds. Asking SIMO to reach $5B by 2030 requires not just continued cyclical strength but structural share takeover of the entire merchant controller market, plus dominance in AI enterprise SSD that today is owned by hyperscaler-aligned suppliers (Marvell, Broadcom in-house). The market is pricing a low-probability outcome as base.
5. Peer Relative Valuation
| Company | Mkt Cap | EV | TTM Rev | FY26E Rev | EV/Sales TTM | EV/Sales FY26E | FY26E P/E | TTM GM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SIMO | $7.97B | $7.76B | $1.06B | $1.65B | 7.3x | 4.7x | 26x | 47% |
| Phison (8299.TW) | $13.8B | $13.5B | $1.98B | $2.4B | 6.8x | 5.6x | 22x | 32% |
| ASPEED (5274.TW) | $11.6B | $11.5B | $293M | $330M | 39x | 35x | 75x | 65% |
| MaxLinear (MXL) | $6.34B | $6.5B | $468M | $700M | 14x | 9.3x | 80x | 57% |
| Marvell (MRVL) | $80B+ | $82B | $6B+ | $8B | 14x | 10x | 28x | 60% |
| Peer median | — | — | — | — | 10x | 8x | 30x | — |
The relative read: Phison is the only true comp. SIMO at 4.7x FY26E EV/Sales looks cheaper than Phison's 5.6x, but Phison carries a Taiwan liquidity/governance discount. Adjusting Phison to a US-comparable multiple (~6.5x), SIMO's FY26E "fair" EV/Sales is ~6x → EV $9.9B → $/ADS ~$300.
The tension: DCF says $135, relative says ~$300. When the two diverge by this much, it's almost always because the relative comp set is also priced to a cyclical peak, and DCF is the more honest anchor. The whole NAND complex is in late-cycle squeeze pricing, distorting the peer multiples upward.
6. WACC/TGR Sensitivity (Base Case $/ADS)
| WACC \ TGR | 2.0% | 2.5% | 3.0% | 3.5% | 4.0% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9.0% | $176 | $190 | $208 | $228 | $254 |
| 10.0% | $147 | $158 | $171 | $186 | $204 |
| 11.0% | $124 | $133 | $143 | $154 | $167 |
| 12.0% | $107 | $113 | $121 | $130 | $140 |
| 13.0% | $93 | $98 | $104 | $111 | $119 |
To justify $234 at TGR 3%, WACC needs to drop to ~8% — only realistic if SIMO permanently re-rates as an AI infrastructure play with materially lower equity risk premium.
7. Bull Case Stress Test — What Justifies $234?
Single-lever sensitivities (each moves bull from $195)
| Lever change | New $/ADS | Δ |
|---|---|---|
| WACC 11% → 10% (AI infra re-rating) | $223 | +$28 |
| TGR 3% → 3.5% | $213 | +$18 |
| 2030 Rev $3.8B → $4.5B | $216 | +$21 |
| 2030 OM 24% → 27% | $213 | +$18 |
| Yahoo β 1.08 → WACC 9.5% | $237 | +$42 |
WACC compression is the single largest lever. The market is implicitly voting for an AI infrastructure re-rating right now.
Combinations that justify $234+
| Path | 2030 Rev | OM | WACC | TGR | $/ADS | Plausibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: Operational stretch | $4.5B (38% CAGR) | 27% | 11.0% | 3.0% | $228 | Low |
| B: Multiple re-rating | $3.8B | 24% | 9.5% | 3.0% | $237 | Medium |
| C: Balanced bull | $4.0B | 25% | 10.0% | 3.0% | $253 | Medium |
| D: Maximum bull | $4.5B | 27% | 9.5% | 3.5% | $349 | Very low |
Joint probability of full bull realization
| Lever | Standalone probability |
|---|---|
| 2030 Revenue $4B+ | 25% |
| 2030 OM 25%+ | 40% |
| Sustained WACC 10% | 30% |
| Joint (with correlation) | 8–12% |
At $234, you're paying for a ~10% probability outcome. Expected value math: 25% × $59 + 65% × $145 + 10% × $250 = $148. The option on the bull case is real, just not worth $99/ADS over probability-weighted FV.
8. The Single Tell That Would Change the Thesis
MonTitan revenue trajectory in Q3'26 (October print).
Management said MonTitan reaches 5–10% of FY26 revenue. On $1.65B FY26 revenue, that's $80–165M for the year.
If MonTitan exits 2026 at $50M+ quarterly run-rate ($200M+ annualized):
- 2027 enterprise revenue lands at $300–400M
- $4B 2030 revenue path becomes plausible (probability 25% → 50%)
- Mix shift validates OM 25%+ bull case
- Probability-weighted FV moves from $135 to $185–200
If MonTitan disappoints (slow ramp, single-customer concentration, ASP pressure from Marvell):
- Bull thesis collapses
- Stock retraces toward $135–150
Secondary tells
| Date | Event | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| July 30, 2026 (est.) | SIMO Q2'26 earnings | Sequential ramp confirmation |
| May 2026 | Phison Q1'26 print | Controller sector momentum |
| Ongoing | NAND spot pricing | Pull-through compression risk if NAND prices roll |
| Ongoing | Marvell custom silicon updates | MonTitan TAM erosion if MRVL retains hyperscaler wins |
9. Bottom Line
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current price | $234.52 |
| Probability-weighted DCF fair value | $135 |
| Relative valuation (Phison-implied) | ~$300 |
| Wedbush PT (highest sell-side) | $180 |
| Median sell-side PT | $140–160 |
| 12M Price Target | $145 |
| Recommendation | AVOID / Trim if held |
The Q1 print was genuinely exceptional and the AI MonTitan story is real. But the stock has run 101% in 25 days and is now pricing a 41% revenue CAGR through 2030. Smartphone NAND demand is weakening (CEO Kou explicitly flagged China handset declines >10%), the NAND price spike compresses customer pull-through, and MonTitan needs to displace incumbents (Marvell, Broadcom) to reach embedded expectations.
Tactical framework if forced to hold through the run:
- Trim 50% above $230
- Hold remainder until October MonTitan print
- Full exit if MonTitan misses
- Re-add if MonTitan delivers $200M+ run-rate
Wait for the 20–25% pullback that historically follows blowout post-earnings gaps in this kind of name, or for Q2'26 print on July 30 to validate sequential ramp before re-engaging.
