PUMP — ProPetro Holding Valuation (May 2026)
As of May 19, 2026 | Price: $18.03 | Mkt cap: $2.21B | EV: $2.17B
Situation
PUMP is in mid-transformation from a Permian-focused frac contractor to a dual-engine company: completions (frac + wireline + cementing) plus PROPWR, a "Power-as-a-Service" platform targeting data centers, industrial, and oil & gas microgrids. The strategic pivot was supercharged in Q1 2026 by a Caterpillar framework agreement for 2.1 GW over 5 years (on top of 550 MW already ordered), bringing the 2031 target to approximately 2.6 GW. The company raised $163M net at $10/share in March 2026 — now trading at $18, a well-timed raise rather than a dilutive one.
Q1'26 was the trough: revenue $271M (–7% Q/Q, –24.7% YoY), adj EBITDA $36M (13% margin), net loss $4M. Weather and Iran-war uncertainty drove the print. Management explicitly called Q2 recovery: 12 active fleets (vs approximately 11 Q1), pricing tailwinds from Iran war, and gas-fleet advantage from the diesel-to-Permian-gas spread.
Segment EBITDA — Q1 2026
| Segment | Revenue ($M) | EBITDA ($M) | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic Fracturing | 179.3 | 37.0 | 20.7% |
| Wireline | 61.8 | 13.7 | 22.1% |
| Cementing | 27.8 | 2.1 | 7.6% |
| Power Generation (PROPWR) | 2.2 | (5.3) | startup losses |
| Corporate/recon | (0.5) | (11.1) | — |
| Total | 270.7 | 36.4 | 13.4% |
Read: completions ops are running at 18-22% segment margin. The headline-depressing items are PROPWR ramp losses and corporate overhead. Iran war is a net tailwind: oil up drives activity up; diesel premium drives gas-fleet advantage (PUMP's FORCE electric and Tier IV DGB fleets win share).

Read: On a pure-frac peer basis, PUMP looks expensive (10.3x EV/2026E EBITDA vs ACDC 6x, PTEN 5x). On LBRT comp — the most direct (similar mid-cycle leader with parallel power strategy) — PUMP is in line at approximately 10-11x. The premium to ACDC/PTEN is the PROPWR optionality, not the frac business.
P/B at 2.24x is elevated for a cyclical trough, but the standard P/B framework for cyclicals assumes the assets define the business. PUMP's book is being recomposed: $400-450M of 2026 PROPWR capex is buying assets whose value is tied to power contracts, not frac demand. P/B is becoming a transitional metric here.
Sum-of-the-parts (the right framework for this name)
1. Completions business (Frac + Wireline + Cementing)
- Trough EBITDA Q1 annualized: approximately $210M
- Mid-cycle EBITDA: approximately $280-320M (2024 levels)
- Fair multiple: 6x mid-cycle EBITDA (cyclical, asset-heavy, trough conditions in industry)
- Completions value: approximately $1.8B
2. PROPWR (the optionality)
- 240 MW committed under contract today
- 550 MW ordered for delivery by end-2027
- 2.6 GW targeted by end-2031 (Caterpillar pipeline + existing orders)
- Industry economics: approximately $1.0-1.5M revenue/MW/year, 40-45% EBITDA margin
- At full 2.6 GW deployment: approximately $2.6-3.9B revenue, approximately $1.0-1.5B steady-state EBITDA
- Heavily discounted for execution risk, capex intensity, financing risk
- PROPWR value range: $0 (bear) / $1.0B (base, partial scale to 1.0 GW with $300M EBITDA at 6x discounted) / $3.0B (bull, full scale)
3. Net cash adjustment
- Currently +$38M net cash
- Expected to turn to approximately $1.0-1.5B net debt by 2028 as PROPWR capex peaks (even with Caterpillar financing)
Three-scenario probability-weighted valuation
WACC: Rf 4.5% + β 1.4 × ERP 5.0% = Ke 11.5%; Kd after-tax 6.5%; equity weight 92% (low debt now) → WACC ≈ 11.0%
| Bear (30%) | Base (50%) | Bull (20%) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iran war | Resolves Q3'26 | Drags into 2027 | Persistent through 2027 |
| Oil price band | $50-65 | $65-85 | $85-100 |
| Frac mid-cycle EBITDA | $240M | $300M | $350M |
| PROPWR 2030 EBITDA | $100M | $300M | $700M |
| PROPWR 2030 deployed | approximately 500 MW | approximately 1.2 GW | approximately 2.0 GW |
| Completions value ($B) | 1.2 | 1.8 | 2.3 |
| PROPWR value ($B) | 0.3 | 1.4 | 3.8 |
| (–) 2028 net debt ($B) | 0.8 | 1.3 | 1.5 |
| Equity value ($B) | 0.7 | 1.9 | 4.6 |
| ÷ Diluted shares 2028 (M) | 135 | 140 | 145 |
| Per-share FV | $5.19 | $13.57 | $31.72 |
Probability-weighted FV = $14.79/share vs current $18.03 (–18% downside).
Reverse DCF sanity check
At $18.03 share price / $2.17B EV, the market is implicitly pricing one of:
- 13x EV/EBITDA on $167M 2026E (rich for trough frac)
- Approximately $300-400M EBITDA expected by 2028 (Frac mid-cycle plus PROPWR contribution of $80-120M)
- SOTP — $1.5B for frac plus $0.7B for PROPWR ($600M EBITDA in 5 years at 6x, discounted to 2.5x today)
This is achievable but requires PROPWR to deliver near-base-case execution. The market is pricing in approximately the base case with no margin of safety.
What makes PUMP different from a generic cyclical OFS name
- Net cash balance sheet — rare in pressure pumping. ACDC, NINE carry net debt 2-3x EBITDA. PUMP optionality intact.
- The Caterpillar framework — Cat committing 2.1 GW of supply is strong validation. Cat does not pencil that out for non-credible buyers.
- Gas-burning fleet positioning — FORCE electric and Tier IV DGB fleets benefit directly from diesel/gas spread widening in the Permian under the Iran war. Customer mix shift toward natural gas pumping is structural.
- Permian concentration — both a strength (lowest-cost basin, longest E&P activity tail) and a risk (single-basin exposure if Permian decelerates).
Risks
- PROPWR capex bomb — $400-450M PROPWR capex 2026 vs $208M FY25 EBITDA. Even with Cat financing reducing cash outflow, free cash burn is real. Watch for additional equity or debt raises in late 2026/2027.
- Hyperscaler timing — LBRT explicitly flagged "some large projects have seen timing uncertainties and cancellations" on the power Q1 call. Data center buildout is real but lumpy; not all signed contracts deploy on schedule.
- Frac pricing — even with structural attrition, completions pricing recovery is slow. LBRT's 2026 EBITDA guidance is lower YoY despite higher utilization.
- Iran war reversal — main upside catalyst right now. If diplomacy returns and oil drops to the $60s, frac demand softens and the diesel/gas spread compresses.
- Permian concentration — basin-specific risk that other OFS names diversify away from.
- FORCE lease buyouts — $40-50M in 2026, $100-200M cumulative through 2028. Strategically sound but a near-term capex drag.
Verdict
| Value | |
|---|---|
| Probability-weighted FV | $14.79 |
| Current price | $18.03 |
| Implied downside | –18% |
| Analyst median target | $15.00 |
| Recommendation | Trim / Avoid new longs at $18 |
The setup: Q1 was the trough. Iran war is creating real tailwinds. PROPWR is the right strategic move. But the market has already moved PUMP from approximately $10 (March equity raise pricing) to $18 (+80%), pricing in essentially base-case execution on a transformation that has not yet been proven. The risk/reward is no longer asymmetric.
If you want pressure-pumping exposure to the Iran war / activity recovery thesis without paying the PROPWR transformation premium, ACDC at 6x EV/EBITDA is the cheaper way to play it — but with materially higher leverage and no power optionality. LBRT is the better quality comp but trades at similar multiples to PUMP with a more advanced power strategy and bigger frac scale.
Methodology: Damodaran narrative-plus-numbers framework. SBC treated as real expense. Sum-of-the-parts because PROPWR's economics are fundamentally different from completions.
