NIO Q1 2026 Earnings — The Print Is Better Than Expected
Reported May 21, 2026, before market open. Spot pre-earnings: $5.59. Q1 2026 print was a strong beat across every margin metric, with Q2 guidance materially above Street.

The Crucial Wins
1) Vehicle Margin EXPANDED to 18.8% from 18.1%
This is the single biggest data point. Everyone — analysts, the Street, even bulls — expected vehicle margin to compress in Q1 due to:
- Lower volume (33% sequential drop from Q4)
- Onvo BaaS promotions and subsidies
- Lithium and copper cost inflation
Instead, margin expanded 70bps. CFO Stanley Yu Qu explicitly said: "improving quarter-over-quarter for four consecutive quarters." This is the structural inflection the Q4 print only hinted at.
2) Non-GAAP Operating Profit POSITIVE for 2 Consecutive Quarters
- Q4 2025: RMB 1,251M non-GAAP operating profit ($181M)
- Q1 2026: RMB 67M non-GAAP operating profit ($9.7M)
Q4 was not a fluke. Q1 sustained profitability despite the 33% sequential volume drop. Operating leverage is real.
3) Q2 Guidance Is Strong
- Deliveries: 110–115K (+52.7% to +59.6% YoY)
- Revenue: RMB 32.8–34.4B (+72.4% to +81.2% YoY)
- Implied vehicle margin: trending stable to higher
- Implies May/June average of 40–43K/month (vs April's 29.4K)
Management is forward-guiding 40%+ MoM acceleration from April. That's a confidence statement. Either they are seeing ES9/L80 pre-orders strong enough to underwrite this, or they are setting themselves up for a guide cut later. Given they were conservative on Q1 (guided 80–83K, delivered 83.5K), the former is the more plausible read.
4) Cash Position INCREASED
- Q4 2025 end: RMB 45.9B
- Q1 2026 end: RMB 48.2B (+RMB 2.3B / +$330M)
Even with a GAAP net loss, cash grew. This is the operating-cash-flow-positive evidence the bear thesis on dilution overhang needed. Going concern language was effectively removed:
"Our net current assets turned positive as of March 31, 2026 and we generated positive operating cash flows and adjusted net profit (non-GAAP) in the first quarter of 2026… we believe that our financial resources… will be sufficient to support our continuous operations in the ordinary course of business for the next twelve months."
Dilution overhang has been materially removed from the thesis.
5) R&D Expenses DOWN 41% YoY
- Q1 2025: RMB 3,178M
- Q1 2026: RMB 1,885M
This is enormous cost discipline. NIO has historically been criticized for over-spending on R&D. They have cut it 41% while continuing to launch ES8, ES9, L80, and Firefly variants. Either they are under-investing in the future (bear read) or they have achieved engineering leverage (bull read). Combined with the margin expansion, this looks like genuine operational maturity.
6) Ranking Validation
"The NIO All-New ES8 has ranked first in sales in both China's large SUV segment and the segment priced above RMB 400,000 for five consecutive months."
This confirms the thesis on NIO taking Li Auto's premium share. ES8 = #1 large SUV in China = directly displacing L9 buyers.
Where the Data Is Mixed
Other Sales Margin
"Other sales margin reached 20.6%, a four-year high" — strong, but other sales declined 9.7% sequentially. Margins improved but revenue from non-vehicle business shrank.
April Delivery Weakness Still a Fact
The 29.4K April number is unchanged. But Q2 guide implies May ≥35K and June ≥45K. The cannibalization-from-launch hypothesis is now management's official explanation.
Net Loss Attributable to Shareholders
Still negative at RMB 496M ($72M) on a GAAP basis. The non-GAAP profitability is real but accounting profit hasn't fully sustained.
Implications for the Trade
Stock Reaction Prediction
The combination of margin beat (~200bps better than expected), Q2 guide raise (above Street), continued non-GAAP profitability, and cash position increase should drive a +8% to +15% move, taking the stock from $5.59 close → $6.10–6.45 range. The options market priced in a 17% move pre-earnings. If the actual move is below 17%, options will see vol crush regardless of direction.
Updated Probability Weights
| Scenario | FV | Old Prob | New Prob |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bear | $4.50 | 40% | 25% ↓ |
| Base | $10.00 (was $9.00) | 45% | 50% |
| Bull | $15.00 (was $14.00) | 15% | 25% ↑ |
New probability-weighted FV: $10.50 (was $7.95)
The print confirms: Q4 2025 profit was NOT a fluke, cost discipline is real and accelerating, vehicle margin can hold at 18%+ even at lower volumes, ES8 success is sustainable through Q1, going concern / dilution overhang resolved, and ES9 + L80 are about to add material volume.
Honest Reassessment
I had been increasingly bearish over the prior weeks (lowering FV from $10.50 → $7.95). This print proves I was wrong to lower probability weights as aggressively as I did. The execution disconfirming evidence (April weakness, Onvo struggles, Firefly Thailand) was real but didn't break the core thesis — and the margin and cash flow inflection is bigger than I gave credit for.
Two lessons:
- Don't extrapolate monthly delivery prints into structural thesis decay when the company is between major model launches. April's weakness was real but reflected pre-launch lull, not demand failure.
- Margin trajectory matters more than volume trajectory at this stage of NIO's life cycle. An 18.8% vehicle margin company growing 50%+ at low base is more valuable than a 15% margin company growing 70%+. NIO chose margin over volume in Q1 — and the print proves they can have both.
The print justifies returning to a constructive stance. Target: $10–11 by August on confirmation of ES9 + L80 ramp via May/June delivery prints.
Bottom Line
This was the Q4 2025 profitability sequel investors wanted. Cost discipline + margin expansion + cash growth + raised Q2 guide = the "structural inflection" thesis is now meaningfully de-risked. NIO at $5.59 going into this print was a gift. Even at $6.50–7 it remains meaningfully below probability-weighted fair value of $10.50.
