Hunting the Next AXTI: Global 10-Bagger Screen Across 6 Exchanges

by psind707

Screening for stocks with the structural characteristics that drove AXT Inc (AXTI) from $5 to $73 — a 10x+ move in under 12 months — outside of NASDAQ

The AXTI Playbook — What We're Screening For

AXTI's 10x wasn't random. It required the simultaneous alignment of nine specific factors. We score each candidate against this checklist:

  1. Micro-cap starting point (less than $1B market cap)
  2. Oligopoly chokepoint on a critical AI supply chain input
  3. Real revenue + real customers (not vaporware)
  4. Revenue inflection visible (backlog growth, guide beats)
  5. Loss-to-profit transition (multiple expansion trigger)
  6. Narrative scarcity (only listed pure-play on the theme)
  7. Capacity-constrained with pricing power
  8. Low institutional ownership / under-followed
  9. Tight float dynamics (squeeze potential)

A candidate needs at least 6 of 9 for a realistic shot at 10x. Fewer than 4 = cyclical trade, not a re-rating.

Frankfurt / Xetra

LPKF Laser and Electronics (LPK.DE) — EUR 16.55 | Mkt cap approx EUR 400M | Score: 6.5/9 (HIGHEST GLOBALLY)

Proprietary LIDE (Laser-Induced Deep Etching) technology — the only production-ready tool for manufacturing glass substrates for advanced semiconductor packaging. Intel has publicly committed to glass substrates for high-volume manufacturing by 2030. Samsung piloting. TSMC evaluating.

Bull case: Glass substrates are the next structural bottleneck in AI chip packaging. Organic substrates warp at the sizes needed for next-gen AI accelerators. Glass doesn't warp. When glass substrate adoption hits inflection, LPKF's LIDE tools become the ASML of glass packaging — the only machine that can do the job. At EUR 400M market cap, a 10-20x to EUR 4-8B is plausible if glass wins.

Bear case: Glass substrate adoption is a 2028-2030 story, not 2026. LPKF's LIDE revenue is currently minimal — most revenue comes from PCB prototyping and laser welding. Intel could develop in-house glass structuring. Alternative technologies could emerge.

Catalyst: Intel or TSMC volume qualification of LIDE-processed glass substrates. Timeline: 24-36 months.

US OTC access: Trades as LPKFF.

Aixtron (AIXA.DE) — EUR 44.69 | Mkt cap approx EUR 5B | Score: 5/9

Makes the MOCVD (metalorganic chemical vapor deposition) machines that grow InP epitaxial layers. This is the equipment that industry analysis identified as the "hard bottleneck" in the InP supply chain — delivery cycles of 10-12 months. Duopoly with Veeco.

Bull case: Every InP capacity expansion globally (AXT doubling, Sumitomo +40%, JX +20%, Chinese entrants) requires ordering Aixtron MOCVD tools. Raised 2026 revenue guidance to EUR 560M. Net cash balance sheet with EUR 225M. Already 4x from 52-week lows but still trades at steep discount to packaging equipment peers like BESI (82x EV/EBITDA vs Aixtron's 36x).

Bear case: Already re-rated significantly. EUR 5B market cap limits explosive upside. Equipment is cyclical — if the InP/photonics capex cycle peaks, Aixtron's orders normalize.

Catalyst: Continued order intake acceleration from optoelectronics. Timeline: 2026-2027. Realistic upside: 2-3x.

PVA TePla (TPE.DE) — Mkt cap approx EUR 450M | Score: 4/9

Manufactures the VGF crystal growth furnaces that AXT, Sumitomo, JX Metals, and every other InP/GaAs/SiC substrate maker uses. When furnace assembly takes approximately 3 months — PVA TePla is the company building them. Also makes Czochralski pullers for silicon and metrology/inspection equipment.

Bull case: Every InP capacity expansion requires new furnaces. Pure picks-and-shovels at the most fundamental level. Small cap with direct exposure to the crystal growth capex cycle.

Bear case: Furnace equipment is lumpy, cyclical, low-multiple. The market doesn't give 30x EV/Sales to capital equipment companies. Too boring for narrative-driven momentum.

Catalyst: InP/SiC capex orders accelerating. Timeline: 2026-2027. Realistic upside: 2-3x.

SUSS MicroTec (SMHN.DE) — Mkt cap approx EUR 1.2B | Score: 4/9

Lithography, bonding, and photomask equipment for advanced semiconductor packaging — including hybrid bonding tools for 3D chip stacking (HBM, CoWoS). Advanced packaging is the confirmed AI silicon bottleneck.

Bull case: TSMC's CoWoS sold out through 2026. Every new advanced packaging line needs SUSS-type tools. Revenue inflecting on HBM demand.

Bear case: Already re-rated. Multiple competitors (BESI, Tokyo Electron). Mid-cap territory limits explosive moves. Realistic upside: 2-3x.

London (LSE AIM)

IQE plc (IQE.L) — approx $0.70 | Mkt cap approx $590M | Score: 6/9

UK-based epitaxial wafer pure-play, currently in financial distress and undergoing strategic review (possible sale). Makes the device-quality InP/GaAs epi layers that go on top of AXT's bare substrates — one step downstream in the same supply chain. Revenue $122M, real customers including Lumentum.

Bull case: If a well-capitalized buyer (Coherent, Lumentum, PE firm) acquires IQE at a premium, shareholders see 3-5x. If IQE restructures and the InP demand surge lifts utilization, the stock re-rates from distressed to cyclical recovery — potentially 5-10x. Shares already soared more than 10x in four months during early 2026.

Bear case: Financial distress is real. If no buyer emerges and the balance sheet breaks, equity gets wiped. The upside is M&A premium or restructuring recovery — not organic growth.

Catalyst: Strategic review outcome (M&A announcement or restructuring plan). Timeline: 6-12 months.

Hong Kong (HKSE)

Lightelligence (01879.HK) — IPO'd April 28, 2026 | Mkt cap approx HK$80B ($10.2B) | Score: 4/9

World's first listed AI silicon photonics chip company. Opened at HK$880, surging 400%+ from HK$183.2 IPO price. 88.3% revenue share in China's independent Scale-up optical interconnect market. Cornerstone investors: Alibaba, GIC, BlackRock, Temasek. 70% of IPO proceeds allocated to R&D.

Bull case: Near-monopoly in China optical interconnect. Optical computing (PACE chips) is genuinely novel. If revenue scales to $1B+ with 30%+ margins, $10B is cheap.

Bear case: Just IPO'd 4 days ago at $10.2B market cap — likely buying euphoria. Need to see actual financials to assess. High risk of being the "AXTI at $73" rather than "AXTI at $5."

Catalyst: First post-IPO earnings report. Must show revenue trajectory to justify valuation.

O-Net Technologies (0877.HK) — Mkt cap approx HK$3-5B | Score: 3/9

Designs and manufactures optical networking subcomponents (pump lasers, tunable filters, VOAs, WDMs, ICRs). Supplier to Zhongji Innolight and other transceiver makers — sits one layer deeper in the optical stack. Shenzhen-based, HK-listed since 2010.

Bull case: Component supplier benefiting from 800G/1.6T transceiver volume ramp. Small cap with real revenue and real products. Rising tide lifts all boats in optical components.

Bear case: Not a chokepoint — multiple competitors exist. More a cyclical beneficiary than a monopolist. Realistic upside: 3-5x.

HKSE IPO Pipeline — Score: TBD

The most interesting HKSE opportunity may be names that haven't listed yet. At least 25 companies debuted in Hong Kong in Q1 2026, half of them tech firms. Biren Technology surged 120% on debut. Zhongji Innolight (world's largest optical transceiver maker, $10.8B net income in 2025) has confidentially filed for HK secondary listing, seeking $3B+. Baidu's Kunlunxin AI chip unit also filed.

The play: Getting allocation in AI/photonics IPOs priced at reasonable multiples offers the cleanest entry — before the 400% Day 1 pop. Requires broker relationships for allocation access.

Singapore (SGX)

Micro-Mechanics (SGX: 5DD) — S$1.60 | Mkt cap approx S$220M | Score: 3/9

Precision consumable tools (die-attach capillaries, wire-bonding tools) consumed during semiconductor packaging. Every chip that gets packaged uses these tools — they wear out and need replacing. Razor-blade model for semiconductor manufacturing. 51.5% gross margin, zero debt, S$27.2M cash.

Bull case: If AI-driven chip volumes double packaging throughput by 2028, consumables revenue doubles mechanically. Highest margins on SGX semi bench. Genuine micro-cap at S$220M.

Bear case: Consumables are a commodity — multiple competitors exist. No technology moat beyond manufacturing quality. Steady compounder, not explosive re-rater. Think 15-20% annual returns.

Catalyst: Global chip packaging volume growth. Timeline: Ongoing. Realistic upside: 2-3x over 2 years.

CSE Global (SGX: 544) — approx S$0.50 | Mkt cap approx S$500M | Score: 3/9

Data center electrification and automation systems integrator. Amazon secured strategic equity stake (up to 63M shares) in November 2025, partnership extending through 2030. Revenue S$700M+ run-rate. Electrification segment growing 12.4% YoY.

Bull case: Amazon validation is real. Singapore becoming a major SE Asian data center hub. At 0.7x EV/Sales, cheap by any standard.

Bear case: Systems integration is low-margin, labor-intensive. No technology moat. Amazon can switch integrators. Realistic upside: 2x.

UMS Integration (SGX: 558) — S$1.39 | Mkt cap approx S$900M | Score: 3/9

Precision components for semiconductor equipment OEMs (primarily Applied Materials). Malaysia sales surging 71% YoY from new major customer. Gross margins expanding to 58.2%. Zero debt.

Bull case: Every new AI fab needs UMS-type vacuum chamber components. Penang expansion targeting AI-driven demand. Analyst target S$2.92 (approximately 2x upside).

Bear case: Contract manufacturer making parts to AMAT's specs. No proprietary technology. Customer concentration risk. Realistic upside: 2-3x.

Bursa Malaysia

Inari Amertron (KL: INARI) — RM3.10 | Mkt cap approx RM11B ($2.5B) | Score: 4/9

Malaysia's largest OSAT for RF components (primarily Broadcom iPhone filters). Pivoting to photonics packaging for high-speed data transfer in data centres — this is the strategic bet that could re-rate the stock.

Bull case: CPO scaling to millions of units by 2028-2029 will require OSAT outsourcing — exactly as smartphone RF chips outsource to Inari today. Inari has Broadcom relationships (Broadcom is the number 1 CPO switch ASIC vendor), precision packaging expertise in Penang, and capacity. If Inari wins a Broadcom CPO packaging contract, the stock re-rates from "smartphone RF" to "AI photonics infrastructure."

Bear case: Photonics pivot is announced but not yet contributing meaningful revenue. Still 80%+ RF/smartphone. Already RM11B market cap — too large for a 10x. Needs a confirmed photonics contract to be actionable.

Catalyst: Tier-1 photonics packaging contract announcement. Timeline: 12-24 months. Realistic upside: 2-3x.

Frontken Corporation (KL: FRONTKEN) — RM5.50 | Mkt cap approx RM6B | Score: 3/9

Surface engineering and precision cleaning for semiconductor equipment chambers. Refurbishes and recoats critical components inside etch and deposition tools. Recurring revenue model — chambers need re-coating every few thousand wafer cycles. 30%+ net margins.

Bull case: As global fab utilization rises on AI demand, Frontken's service revenue grows mechanically. Very well-run, highest margins on Bursa semi bench.

Bear case: Already re-rated from RM1 to RM5.50. Service business with no technology moat. Realistic upside: 2x.

Pentamaster (KL: PENTA) — approx RM4 | Mkt cap approx RM3B | Score: 3/9

Automated test equipment for semiconductor and EV sectors. The photonics angle: photonic IC testing is a new and unsolved challenge — testing optical chips requires light, not just electricity. If Pentamaster develops photonic IC test capabilities, they capture a new market with few competitors.

Bull case: First-mover in photonic IC testing could create a genuine chokepoint position.

Bear case: Photonic testing capability is aspirational, not confirmed. Still primarily automotive/consumer IC testing. Realistic upside: 2-3x if photonic testing materializes.

Globetronics (KL: GTRONIC) — approx RM0.60 | Mkt cap approx RM500M | Score: 2/9

Sensor packaging specialist. Genuine micro-cap. If Globetronics pivots to packaging optical sensors or photonic components for data center applications, re-rating potential exists.

Reality: Management hasn't signaled a photonics pivot. Still focused on declining consumer sensors. Would need a strategic pivot announcement. Not actionable today.

Key Takeaways

The highest-conviction AXTI analog globally is LPKF Laser (Frankfurt). Same micro-cap starting point, same chokepoint positioning, same "only tool that can do the job" narrative. Glass substrates for advanced packaging are 2-3 years behind InP's moment — meaning you're buying the optionality before the inflection, which is where the 10x lives.

The nearest-term catalyst is IQE (LSE AIM). Strategic review outcome in 6-12 months. Already 10x'd from January lows, but M&A premium or restructuring could add another 3-5x from current levels.

Frankfurt has the deepest bench. Four actionable names spanning materials (LPKF), equipment (Aixtron, PVA TePla), and packaging tools (SUSS MicroTec). Germany's photonics/semiconductor equipment ecosystem is underappreciated relative to the US or Asia.

SGX and Bursa Malaysia don't have the right structural setup for 10x plays. Their semiconductor ecosystems are service/packaging/equipment — not bottleneck materials. These markets are where you park capital for quality 2-3x compounding alongside a high-beta satellite position on other exchanges.

HKSE's best opportunity is the IPO pipeline. Getting allocation in AI/photonics IPOs before the Day 1 pop is the cleanest trade. The listed names are either too large (Lightelligence at $10.2B) or lack chokepoint positioning (O-Net).

The honest truth: The AXTI setup — a real company at the exact chokepoint of a multi-trillion dollar buildout, trading at micro-cap valuations with 2 analysts covering it — happens once every 2-3 years. The next one probably isn't in photonics anymore. It's probably in whatever supply chain bottleneck emerges next — glass substrates (LPKF), advanced packaging consumables, or something in the power/cooling stack that nobody has identified yet.
