LPKF Laser Valuation — The Glass Substrate Optionality Play | Fair Value EUR 8-14
Fair Value: EUR 8–14 per share (midpoint EUR 12.50) | Current Price: EUR 16.55 | Q1 2026 Report Released April 30, 2026
Company Snapshot
LPKF Laser & Electronics SE (Xetra: LPK.DE / US OTC: LPKFF) is a Germany-based laser technology company with four business segments: Electronics (including LIDE glass processing), Welding, Solar, and Development. Founded in 1976, headquartered in Garbsen near Hanover, approximately 700 employees.
The investment thesis centers on one technology: LIDE (Laser Induced Deep Etching) — LPKF's patented process for high-precision, crack-free structuring of thin glass substrates. LIDE is positioned as a key enabling technology for glass-based advanced semiconductor packaging, which Intel, Samsung, and TSMC are evaluating as the successor to organic substrates for next-generation AI chip packaging.

Segment Breakdown — Q1 2026
| Segment | Q1 2026 Rev | Q1 2025 Rev | YoY | What It Does |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Development | EUR 6.2M | EUR 5.7M | +9% | R&D tools, rapid PCB prototyping, defense orders |
| Electronics | EUR 5.5M | EUR 5.6M | -2% | PCB laser cutting, LIDE glass processing |
| Welding | EUR 4.1M | EUR 3.4M | +21% | Laser plastic welding (consumer electronics, medical) |
| Solar | EUR 1.3M | EUR 10.6M | -88% | Thin-film solar scribing (collapsing) |
| Total | EUR 17.1M | EUR 25.3M | -32% |
The Solar segment collapse (EUR -9.3M YoY) accounts for the entire group revenue decline. Stripping out Solar, LPKF's core business is stable to growing. The Solar weakness is driven by investment reluctance amid an expected technology shift toward perovskites — a structural, not cyclical, decline.
The LIDE Technology Story — Where We Actually Are
LPKF's annual report and Q1 2026 report provide clear language on the LIDE opportunity:
- LIDE technology is being successfully deployed by leading semiconductor customers in test and R&D environments
- Additional follow-on orders confirm its role as a key technology for crack-free, high-precision glass processing
- LPKF is in concrete discussions with several customers regarding orders for initial production systems
- Management states: "The question is no longer whether this shift will occur, but when the ramp-up phase will begin"
- LPKF is expanding beyond a single process step — adding singulation of glass-based packages and laser-based bonding of multilayer glass stacks
- Working on integration of Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) on glass substrates — optical components integrated directly into the chip package
Critical caveat from management: "Potential high-volume orders from the Advanced Semicon Packaging area are not included in this forecast, as the timing of the market-anticipated ramp-up is determined not by the LIDE process provided by LPKF, but by the qualification of downstream process steps."
Translation: LIDE works. Customers are using it. But volume production orders depend on other companies' process steps qualifying first. LPKF is ready — the downstream isn't. This could take 1-3 years.
Current LIDE revenue is embedded within the Electronics segment (EUR 5.5M/quarter total). LIDE is a fraction of that — mostly R&D and qualification tool sales, not volume production systems.
WACC Derivation
| Input | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Risk-free rate (German 10Y Bund) | 2.60% | Current |
| Unlevered beta (electronic equipment) | 1.20 | Damodaran European electronic equipment |
| D/E ratio | approximately 0.10 | Nearly all equity |
| Levered beta (Hamada) | 1.25 | |
| Equity risk premium (Germany) | 5.00% | Damodaran implied |
| Cost of equity (CAPM) | 8.85% | |
| Small-cap / pre-inflection premium | +2.5% | LIDE inflection unproven at scale |
| WACC | 11.4% | |
| Terminal growth rate | 2.5% |
Lower WACC than US semiconductor names because: German risk-free rate is lower, beta is moderate (industrial equipment, not high-growth tech), and LPKF has real revenue and a 50-year operating history.
Three-Scenario DCF (Probability-Weighted 25/50/25)
The key modeling challenge: LPKF is two businesses in one. The legacy business (Electronics ex-LIDE, Welding, Development, Solar) generates approximately EUR 100M revenue at low margins. LIDE is the optionality call that could add EUR 50-300M+ if glass substrates win.

Key Assumptions by Scenario
Bear case: Glass substrate adoption delayed past 2030. Intel scales back commitment. LIDE remains a niche R&D tool generating EUR 25M/year. Solar continues declining. Legacy business stable but uninspiring. North Star restructuring partially succeeds but double-digit EBIT margin never achieved.
Base case: Glass substrates enter initial volume production 2028-2029 at Intel and/or TSMC. LIDE becomes the standard glass processing tool for advanced packaging. LPKF reaches EUR 40M LIDE revenue by 2028, EUR 80M by 2030. North Star delivers double-digit group EBIT margin by 2028 as guided. CPO on glass adds incremental upside post-2029.
Bull case: Glass substrates adopted faster than expected (2027 volume ramp). Multiple semiconductor fabs qualify LIDE simultaneously. LPKF expands to singulation and bonding (higher TAM per customer). CPO on glass becomes a mainstream architecture. LIDE alone reaches EUR 200M by 2030. LPKF becomes "the ASML of glass packaging."
DCF Output
| Scenario | Equity Value/Share | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Bear | EUR 4.50 | 25% |
| Base | EUR 11.00 | 50% |
| Bull | EUR 24.00 | 25% |
| Probability-Weighted DCF | EUR 12.60 |
Reverse DCF — What the Market Is Pricing at EUR 16.55
At EUR 420M EV, the current price implies:
- LIDE revenue reaching approximately EUR 60-80M by 2028-2029
- Group EBIT margin achieving the 10%+ North Star target
- Legacy business maintaining EUR 110M+ revenue despite Solar weakness
- No further capital raises or dilution
The market is pricing in the base-case LIDE ramp with no margin of safety. Any delay in glass substrate adoption or shortfall in LIDE conversion from R&D tools to production systems creates downside.
Peer Relative Valuation
LPKF is a hybrid of industrial laser equipment and semiconductor tool optionality. Closest peers:
| Ticker | Company | Mkt Cap | TTM Revenue | Gross Margin | EV/Sales | Character |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LPK.DE | LPKF | EUR 405M | EUR 115M | approximately 35% | 3.6x | Laser tools + LIDE glass optionality |
| AIXA.DE | Aixtron | EUR 5B | EUR 540M | 42% | 9x | MOCVD equipment, semi cycle |
| SMHN.DE | SUSS MicroTec | EUR 1.2B | EUR 440M | 38% | 2.7x | Packaging lithography/bonding |
| BESI | BE Semiconductor | EUR 8B | EUR 600M | 64% | 13x | Die-attach, hybrid bonding |
| IPGP | IPG Photonics | $2.5B | $1B | 38% | 2.5x | Industrial laser systems |
LPKF at 3.6x EV/Sales is already above most industrial laser peers (IPG at 2.5x). The premium is entirely LIDE optionality. Strip that out and the legacy business alone is worth approximately 1.5-2x EV/Sales = EUR 170-230M = EUR 7-9 per share.
What Multiple Does LPKF Deserve If LIDE Inflects?
| LIDE Revenue Level | Implied Group Multiple | Peer Anchor | Equity/Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| EUR 5M (current — R&D tools) | 2.0x | IPG territory | EUR 9 |
| EUR 40M (base 2028) | 4-5x | SUSS MicroTec territory | EUR 16-20 |
| EUR 80M (base 2030) | 6-8x | Between SUSS and Aixtron | EUR 25-35 |
| EUR 200M (bull 2030) | 8-12x | Aixtron/BESI territory | EUR 50-80 |
The re-rating is entirely conditional on LIDE volume orders materializing. Without them, LPKF is a EUR 7-9 stock with a promising R&D division.
Sum-of-Parts Valuation
| Component | Revenue | Multiple | Value | Per Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Legacy (Electronics ex-LIDE, Welding, Dev, Solar) | EUR 100M | 1.5x | EUR 150M | EUR 6.12 |
| LIDE (current — R&D/qualification tools) | EUR 5M | 10x (premium for optionality) | EUR 50M | EUR 2.04 |
| LIDE optionality (probability-weighted future value) | n/a | See methodology below | EUR 85M | EUR 3.47 |
| Net cash / balance sheet value | n/a | 1x | EUR 20M | EUR 0.82 |
| Total SoTP | EUR 305M | EUR 12.45 |
LIDE optionality valued as: 40% probability of EUR 80M revenue by 2030 at 8x EV/Sales = EUR 640M, discounted back 4 years at 11.4% = approximately EUR 425M, multiplied by 40% = EUR 170M. Plus 15% probability of bull case (EUR 200M at 10x) discounted similarly = approximately EUR 110M. Weighted and probability-adjusted total: approximately EUR 85M in present value.
Blended Fair Value
| Method | Weight | Value |
|---|---|---|
| DCF (probability-weighted) | 45% | EUR 12.60 |
| Peer relative (legacy + LIDE premium) | 25% | EUR 12.50 |
| Sum-of-parts | 30% | EUR 12.45 |
| Blended fair value | EUR 12.50 | |
| Fair value range | EUR 8–14 |
Risks and Catalysts
Bull Catalysts (12-36 months)
- Intel volume qualification of LIDE-processed glass substrates — the single most important catalyst
- First production system order announced (vs current R&D/qualification tools) — immediate re-rating trigger
- TSMC glass substrate evaluation progresses to pilot production
- CPO on glass demonstration with a Tier-1 semiconductor customer
- North Star restructuring delivers visible cost improvements in H2 2026, EBIT margin turning positive
- Samsung advanced packaging program adopts glass with LIDE processing
Bear Risks
- Glass substrate adoption delayed past 2030 — Intel or TSMC conclude organic substrates are sufficient for near-term needs
- Alternative glass processing technologies emerge — competing laser or mechanical methods that bypass LIDE
- Solar segment continues collapsing without perovskite replacement revenue materializing
- North Star restructuring costs exceed guidance (3-4% of revenue in 2026 — approximately EUR 4M)
- Customer concentration risk — small number of semiconductor customers driving LIDE demand
- Macro / tariff impact — LPKF is export-oriented, directly affected by trade policy uncertainty
Kill Switch (Single Event That Could Zero the Thesis)
Intel formally cancels or indefinitely postpones glass substrate program for advanced packaging. This would remove the primary demand driver for LIDE volume production and strand LPKF's R&D investment. Probability estimate: 15-20%.
Balance Sheet Assessment
| Metric | Value | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Equity ratio | 67.8% | Healthy |
| Syndicated loan | Extended through 2028 | Financing secured for transformation |
| Net working capital | EUR 25.4M | Adequate |
| Current ratio | Adequate (current liabilities EUR 30.4M vs current assets EUR 45.9M) | Manageable |
| Share buyback program | Active (small scale, approximately 20K shares/year) | Positive signal |
No near-term liquidity risk. The syndicated loan extension through 2028 secures financing for the North Star restructuring and continued LIDE investment. However, if LIDE volume orders do not materialize by 2028, LPKF may need to refinance under less favorable terms.
Investment Conclusion
| Fair Value Range | EUR 8–14 (midpoint EUR 12.50) |
| Current Price | EUR 16.55 |
| Analyst Consensus PT | EUR 10.65 |
| Implied Downside to Fair Value | approximately 15-35% |
| Verdict | Modestly overvalued; LIDE optionality partially priced in |
LPKF is the right technology with a genuine chokepoint position in glass substrate processing. The LIDE thesis is intact: the technology works, customers are using it, management is in production-system discussions, and the addressable market (advanced semiconductor packaging) is massive and growing. The expansion into singulation, bonding, and CPO on glass extends the TAM well beyond the initial LIDE tool sale.
However, at EUR 16.55, the stock is trading approximately 30-35% above fundamental fair value. The 3x move from EUR 5.35 has already priced in the base-case LIDE ramp with no margin of safety. All three sell-side analysts covering LPKF have price targets below the current share price.
The ideal entry is EUR 8-10, where you get the legacy business at fair value and LIDE optionality essentially free. At that price, you're paying nothing for the glass substrate thesis — any LIDE volume order becomes pure upside.
The catalyst to size up: A confirmed production system order from Intel, TSMC, or their packaging suppliers. This would shift the fair value range to EUR 18-30 overnight, as the market re-rates from "optionality" to "confirmed revenue stream." That announcement — not the current narrative momentum — is the moment to build a full position.
