The Print

Fluence reported Q2 FY2026 (quarter ending March 31, 2026) after the close on May 6. The stock ripped +42% to approximately $19.32 the following day, touching an intraday high of $20.29 before settling. Roth/MKM upgraded to Buy and doubled their price target from $13 to $26.

Headline Numbers:

Metric Q2 FY2026 Consensus Beat/Miss
Revenue $464.9M ~$500M+ Miss (~7%)
Adj. Gross Margin 11.1% ~10.5% Beat
EPS -$0.16 -$0.21 Beat
Net Loss -$20.9M — Narrowing
Backlog $5.6B (record) — —
Order Intake (YTD) $2.0B — 2x YoY

Revenue missed, but the market didn't care. Here's why.

Why the Stock Ripped on a Revenue Miss

1. Hyperscaler Master Supply Agreements

The headline catalyst: Fluence signed master supply agreements with two hyperscale data center customers. In a market obsessed with AI infrastructure buildout, this is the kind of customer validation that reprices a stock. Management noted 50% of FY2026 orders are from new customers, suggesting the addressable market is expanding beyond traditional utility buyers.

2. Record Backlog = Revenue Visibility

$5.6B backlog at quarter-end, growing. With FY2026 revenue guidance of $3.2-3.6B, the backlog covers approximately 1.6-1.8x the full-year target. This is the kind of visibility that de-risks forward estimates and lets the market pay up for growth.

3. Margin Trajectory

Adjusted gross margin of 11.1% improved from Q1 levels and sits within the full-year 11-13% guidance range. The company is proving it can maintain margins even as ASPs compress (down 26% YoY to approximately $192/kWh). This is the margin expansion story the market wants to see — volume leverage overwhelming ASP pressure.

4. Guidance Reaffirmation

Full-year guidance reaffirmed: $3.2-3.6B revenue and $40-60M adjusted EBITDA. For a company transitioning from growth-at-all-costs to profitability, holding guidance when many peers are cutting is a strong signal.

5. Revenue Miss Was Explainable

Management attributed approximately $80M of revenue push to Q3 from resolved logistics issues in Vietnam and Spain — not demand destruction. Resolved shipping delays are a fundamentally different narrative than manufacturing quality problems.

FLNC vs. EOSE — A Study in Execution

The FLNC earnings provide a useful contrast to Eos Energy (EOSE), the other publicly traded pure-play in energy storage. Both operate in long-duration / grid-scale storage, but the businesses are structurally different:

Dimension FLNC EOSE
Revenue (TTM) $2.6B $114M
Gross Margin 11.1% (positive, improving) Deeply negative
Technology Li-ion integrator (proven cells) Proprietary zinc chemistry
Mfg Risk Asset-light (sources cells) Owns manufacturing
Backlog $5.6B $701M
Guidance Track Record Reaffirmed Missed 2 consecutive years
Customer Quality 2 hyperscaler MSAs Utility/C&I, no anchors
Litigation None Securities fraud class action
FWD EV/Revenue approximately 0.8-1.0x approximately 5.5x

The core distinction is business model risk. Fluence integrates commodity lithium-ion cells into turnkey grid solutions with software — it does not bear cell manufacturing risk. Eos is trying to commercialize a novel battery chemistry at scale, which requires flawless manufacturing execution they have not yet demonstrated.

The market is effectively saying: it will pay 0.8-1.0x forward revenue for a proven integrator with positive margins, and 5.5x for an unproven manufacturer with negative margins. That's a 6-7x valuation premium for a company that has yet to prove its unit economics work. Either EOSE is massively overvalued, or the market is pricing in a zinc battery technology breakthrough that fundamentally reshapes the cost curve. The evidence so far favors the former.

What This Means for the Energy Storage Sector

FLNC's results and hyperscaler deals confirm that the demand backdrop for grid-scale energy storage remains extremely strong:

The sector thesis is intact. The question for individual names is execution, margins, and customer quality — not demand.

Valuation Quick Take

At $19.32, FLNC trades at approximately:

The stock is no longer cheap after the 42% rip, but it's not expensive either for a business growing 40%+ with a path to sustained profitability. The hyperscaler agreements provide a re-rating catalyst that could push multiples higher if those contracts translate to revenue in FY2027-2028.

Key Catalysts Ahead

Bottom Line

Fluence is establishing itself as the winner-take-most in grid-scale energy storage. Record backlog, hyperscaler validation, improving margins, and reaffirmed guidance — this is what execution looks like. The stock deserved to re-rate.

The contrast with EOSE couldn't be sharper. One company is proving it can deliver at scale. The other is still trying to prove its batteries work at scale.
