Cover Corp (5253.T) — Valuation
Cover is the entertainment-and-technology company behind hololive — Japan's leading VTuber talent agency and production house — monetizing virtual talent through streaming, live concerts, merchandising, licensing, a metaverse (Holoearth), and games. It is a high-ROE growth/quality name, the opposite end of the spectrum from the reuse value stocks. The trading-card angle is real but secondary: the hololive OFFICIAL CARD GAME (co-operated with Bushiroad) sits inside a booming merchandising line. The tension: after an explosive FY2025.3, the company entered an adjustment phase in FY2026.3 — revenue growth slowed and profit fell on one-time costs and talent-roster turnover — and the stock still trades at about 22x forward earnings and 5.3x book. You are paying a quality multiple for a franchise whose core driver (a handful of star talents) is showing attrition.

An adjustment phase after the boom
| FY (Mar) | Revenue | Op profit | Net income |
|---|---|---|---|
| FY2024.3 | approx ¥30.2B | approx ¥5.5B | approx ¥4.1B |
| FY2025.3 | ¥43.4B (+43.9%) | ¥8.0B (+44.5%) | ¥5.6B (+34.4%) |
| FY2026.3 | ¥49.3B (+13.7%) | ¥7.06B (−11.8%) | ¥3.0B (−45.7%) |
| FY2027.3 (guide) | ¥51.35B (+4.1%) | ¥7.0B (−0.8%) | ¥4.9B (+62.4%) |
FY2025.3 was explosive, led by the September 2024 launch of the hololive OFFICIAL CARD GAME and a strong global live-events slate. FY2026.3 then slowed sharply: revenue still grew 13.7%, but operating profit fell about 12% and net income nearly halved, on expansion plus restructuring one-time costs and a talent-roster and community adjustment. The FY2027.3 guide is deliberately cautious on the top line (+4.1%) with flat operating profit, while net income rebounds 62% as the one-time costs drop out. In short: hypergrowth is normalizing, and management is signaling a transition year.
Where the money comes from (FY2025.3 service mix)
| Service line | Revenue | Growth | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merchandising (incl. TCG) | ¥20.5B | +64.6% | The engine; hololive OFFICIAL CARD GAME exceeded expectations |
| Streaming / content | ¥9.3B | +21.9% | Core funnel; sensitive to talent roster |
| Live / events | ¥7.8B | +39.1% | Concerts, world tour, overseas (English) shows |
| Licensing / tie-up | (in mix) | growing | Collaborations, IP licensing |
Through the first nine months of FY2026.3, revenue was up 20.2% with merchandising and licensing/tie-up the standouts and trading cards continuing to grow on tournaments and wider distribution.
The trading-card angle (and the Bushiroad link)
The hololive OFFICIAL CARD GAME (hOCG) launched in Japan in September 2024 and is developed and operated in collaboration with Bushiroad (7803) — the same platform-operator role Bushiroad plays across its card business. Cover owns the IP (the hololive talents); Bushiroad handles distribution and operation, including the English edition launched in North America in July 2025. Mechanically it is a VTuber-flavoured take on a collectible card game built around your chosen "oshi" talent, framed as a live-concert stage. For Cover it is a high-margin IP-monetization extension inside merchandising, not the core; for Bushiroad it is another licensed-IP card title running on its rails. It is a genuine growth contributor but remains one line in a talent-driven business.
Valuation
This is a growth/quality name, not a value case: about 22x forward earnings, 5.3x book, roughly 24% forecast ROE, net cash, no dividend. The multiple already prices a return to growth, so the valuation hinges on whether the franchise re-accelerates out of the current adjustment phase. A multiple-based scenario frame is more appropriate than a DCF for a name this early and this talent-sensitive.
| Scenario | Prob. | Driver | Implied cap | vs approx ¥107.7B |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bear | 25% | Talent attrition continues, TCG cools, growth stalls; multiple compresses to approx 15x on approx ¥4.5B NI | approx ¥68B | −37% |
| Base | 45% | Gradual normalization, NI to approx ¥5.5–6B by FY2028.3 at approx 22x | approx ¥125B | +16% |
| Bull | 30% | Re-acceleration: new talent debuts + the hololive Dreams mobile game + TCG + global; NI approx ¥7–8B at 25–28x | approx ¥190B | +76% |
Probability-weighted fair value approximately ¥130B, or roughly ¥1,985 per share (about +20%). The dispersion is wide and binary-ish: the bull case rests on the new mobile game and fresh talent landing, the bear on continued graduations and a cooling card cycle.
Risks
- Talent dependence (primary). The model rests on a roster of star VTubers; graduations and departures (several high-profile exits have occurred) directly hit streaming and merchandising revenue. This is the structural vulnerability and the main reason for the cautious guide.
- Rich multiple. About 22x forward earnings and 5.3x book leave little room for disappointment; a growth stumble compresses the multiple fast.
- Profit trough and one-time costs. FY2026.3 net income nearly halved; the FY2027.3 rebound depends on those costs not recurring.
- Trading-card cycle. hOCG has been a major merchandising driver; a cooling card market would remove a meaningful growth leg.
- Execution on new bets. The bull case leans on the hololive Dreams mobile game and Holoearth — promising but unproven.
Verdict — Hold / Speculative Long, PWFV approx ¥1,985 (about +20%)
A genuinely high-quality, high-ROE, net-cash franchise with a beloved IP, real global reach, and a fast-growing merchandising and trading-card engine (the latter co-operated with Bushiroad). But it is expensive (about 22x forward, 5.3x book), in a self-described adjustment phase with profit at a trough, and fundamentally dependent on a roster of star talents whose attrition is the key risk. The trading-card exposure is a real but secondary growth leg, not the thesis. Own Cover for owned-IP growth optionality (new talent, the hololive Dreams game, global live, TCG) at a quality multiple — not as a cheap value play. The swing variables are talent retention/recruitment and whether the new game and card momentum reignite top-line growth.
Data caveats
Price ¥1,640 and market cap approx ¥107.7B are early-June-2026 prints (the stock is volatile; re-verify before acting). FY2025.3 and FY2026.3 are reported actuals (FY2026.3 announced May 14, 2026); FY2024.3 figures are derived from FY2025.3 year-on-year percentages. FY2027.3 is company guidance. Trading-card revenue is not separately disclosed (reported within merchandising). Scenario fair values are multiple-based model outputs with wide dispersion and are not point predictions. Period naming follows the company convention (year ending March).
