AGRO Revaluation — Argentine + English Sources Integrated (May 2026)
Date: May 5, 2026 Price: $14.42 (Apr 29 close) | Mkt cap: $2.06B | EV: $3.67B | Shares: 142.58M Recommendation: LONG | PT (probability-weighted): ~$24.81 | Implied upside: +72%
Why this matters
Most sell-side coverage of AGRO underweights three things that Argentine sources reveal clearly:
- Profertil's true cash cost is $180-190/ton (CEO disclosure), not the $220+ that most models assume.
- Argentine domestic urea pricing is now passing through Hormuz war premiums almost fully — the input/output ratio for wheat is 56% above its 10-year average as of mid-April 2026.
- 85% of Profertil's 2026 production volume is still open to current market prices — meaning the urea spike has barely flowed through reported numbers yet.
Integrating these with English-language Bloomberg/SEC data produces a probability-weighted PT of approximately $25 vs. consensus around $13.

Sensitivity to Profertil cash cost
The single biggest delta vs. prior models:
- $35/ton lower cash cost (185 vs 220) × 1.3Mt × 90% AGRO stake = +$41M EBITDA
- At 5.5x exit multiple = +$226M EV = +$1.59 per share just from this correction
Where consensus sits — and why it's behind
| Analyst | PT | Implied 2026 EBITDA @ 5.5x |
|---|---|---|
| BTG Pactual (Buy) | $17.00 | $733M |
| UBS (just upgraded from Neutral $8 → Buy $16.20) | $16.20 | $713M |
| Citi (Buy) | $13.00 | $584M |
| Morgan Stanley (Equal-weight) | $13.00 | $584M |
| BofA (Neutral) | $12.20 | $533M |
| Bloomberg consensus | $13.19 | $601M |
| Market (current $14.42) | — | $667M |
| My Base case | $25.80 | $962M |
Most sell-side updated EBITDA only +17% post-Hormuz (BofA's adjustment), still using approximately $480-520/ton implied for Profertil. Argentine sources confirm spot is at $713 with passthrough working — sell-side has not caught up. UBS's recent dramatic upgrade is the early signal that consensus is migrating up.
What Argentine sources reveal that English coverage misses
1. Argentine domestic demand is structurally short
Argentina consumes 2.5Mt/yr; Profertil supplies 1.3Mt = chronic 1.2Mt import deficit. Profertil sells at import parity, currently $683-755/ton. This is not a temporary rally — it is a sustained re-rating of regional pricing.
2. Qatar damage is permanent
Even if Hormuz reopens, Qatar Energy infrastructure damage during the conflict has shut three Indian urea plants. South American import dependence is now structurally tighter than it was pre-conflict.
3. Pampa Energía competitive threat — but also validation
Pampa's $2.4B Fértil Pampa announcement (Apr 22, Bahía Blanca) is the new long-term competitive risk. 2.1Mt new urea capacity online 2030, 60% export-oriented. However: Pampa would not risk $2.4B if long-term economics weren't compelling — confirms strategic value of the asset Profertil already holds. Profertil also has its own $2B 2nd-plant project in carpeta. The race for RIGI tax/FX status is now critical.
4. Wheat economics getting stretched
fyo data (Apr 14) shows urea-to-wheat insumo/producto ratio is 56% above its 10-yr average. This is the real downside risk — at some point Argentine producers reduce urea application, denting Profertil volumes (not prices, since import parity sets the floor). Watch trigo/maíz planting decisions for May/June.
5. Tether commitment is durable
Bosch publicly pledged: "I won't sell except to facilitate Tether reaching 51%". Tether moved from 9.8% (Sep 2024) to 19.4% to 74.26% (post-Dec 2025 offering). Tether's "real assets" thesis is structural — provides floor support for the stock.
Peer relative valuation
| Ticker | Geography | EV/EBITDA 2026E | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| CF Industries | US nitrogen pure-play | ~5.5-6.0x | Direct peer, gas-advantaged, +60% YTD |
| Nutrien | Global N+P+K | ~6.0-7.0x | Sold Profertil to AGRO for $600M |
| Yara | Europe nitrogen | ~5.5x | Gas-disadvantaged, structurally short |
| SLC Agrícola | Brazil crops only | 5.8x | Pure ag, no fertilizer |
| São Martinho | Brazil sugar/ethanol | 5.5x | Direct SE&E peer |
| Cosan | Brazil energy/sugar | 5-6x | Holdco discount applies |
| AGRO @ Base case | LatAm blended | 3.8x current EV | Implies anomalous discount |
| AGRO at PT $25.80 | — | 5.5x | Peer-aligned |
The 3.8x current trading multiple on the Base case is anomalous. Even applying a 25% Argentina country discount to peer 5.5-6x = 4.1-4.5x fair multiple, which still implies $19-22/share.
Q1 2026 expectation (May 11 print)
Modest beat, not a blockbuster. Three reasons:
- Hormuz timing: Strait closed Feb 28 — Q1 spent most of its life at pre-war urea prices. Bosch confirmed 200kt of the 310kt Q1 production was already sold Jan-Feb at pre-war levels.
- Argentine import parity lags spot: Local pricing follows international with a delay; March volumes captured only 2-3 weeks of elevated prices.
- Q1 seasonal mix is wrong: Sugar/ethanol harvest starts April-May. Q1 SE&E is structurally weak vs. Q2/Q3.
Q1 EBITDA estimate: ~$170M vs. consensus around $110-140M. A beat, but not a blowout.
Q2 (August print) is the real catalyst — first quarter with full Hormuz pricing, plus seasonal sugar/ethanol peak. Estimate ~$300M EBITDA.
Insider activity
- March 20, 2026: CEO Mariano Bosch sold 100,000 shares at $14.50 (10% of direct stake). Now holds 897,249 direct + 440,495 indirect + 478,832 fully vested options (all in-the-money $4.94-$7.73 above strike).
- April 7, 2026: Director Manuela Vaz Artigas sold 1,000 shares at $15.03 (noise).
- No insider buying anywhere on record in 2026.
- Tether: Holds 74.26%, no further buys since Dec 11 anchor purchase. Mar 24 reshuffle was administrative only. Stated no intent to acquire or dispose additional shares.
The pattern: management pleased with the price, not raising stakes into Hormuz tape.
Risks (counterarguments)
- Fast Hormuz resolution: Ceasefire + reopen → urea reverts to $400-450 → Bear case → fair value $14, in line with current.
- Argentine demand destruction: Wheat economics are at the edge. Sustained $700+/ton urea may trigger reduced application — first showing in winter wheat planting decisions May-June.
- Tether equity issuance: $2B 2nd Profertil plant capex could trigger another offering. Tether anchors but minorities re-set.
- Leverage: 3.3x net debt/EBITDA on pro forma. Moody's downgraded to B2. Limits buyback flexibility.
- Pampa Fértil Pampa: Long-term capacity overhang for 2030+. Forces Profertil into expansion arms race — capex intensity rises.
Position discipline — single-leg options
Stock has rallied to $14.42 from $13.56 on UBS upgrade. Pre-Q1 setup is unfavorable:
- Stock at fresh local high
- IV elevated into May 11 print
- CEO sold at $14.50 — that level is now psychological resistance
- Q1 will reveal the pre-Hormuz pricing drag visually
Recommendation:
- Avoid May/June expiries — Q1 print risk is binary, near-dated decay if any ceasefire headline hits
- August/September 2026 calls $15-17 strike — captures Q2 print (real catalyst), full Hormuz quarter visibility
- Sizing: 0.4-0.7% of book in options premium given elevated IV
- Keep room to add post-Q1 if the print is messy on optics
Updated PT range
- Bear: $14 (essentially current — no Hormuz benefit captured)
- Base: $26 (urea normalizes at $640 average for remaining 2026 volume)
- Bull: $38 (sustained $720+ urea, capacity expansion narrative gains traction)
- Probability-weighted (30/50/20): $25
- Conservative anchor (sell-side blend): $19-22
Material upside vs. current $14.42 in any scenario except rapid Hormuz resolution.
