Business Overview
Mokingran (夢金園) is a Tianjin-based, technology-oriented Original Brand Manufacturer (OBM) of gold and jewellery, founded in 2000 and H-share listed in 2023. It operates an intelligent manufacturing facility (listed in PRC's "2023 5G Factory Directory") spanning raw material sourcing, R&D, design, manufacturing, and retailing through franchise and self-operated stores, plus e-commerce. The business was honoured with "Top Ten Influential Jewellery Brands in China" in 2025 and has growing overseas sales (Europe, US, Middle East, Southeast Asia — up ~140% YoY to CNY 340M).
Critical structure: ~97% of revenue comes from high-purity gold (足金) jewellery, making it essentially a leveraged gold-price pass-through. Gross margins of 5–8% are far below branded peers (Chow Tai Fook: 28–31%). The company finances raw material purchases via gold loans and hedges inventory price risk through Au(T+D) deferred delivery contracts on the Shanghai Gold Exchange. This hedging strategy has generated cumulative MTM losses exceeding CNY 1.2B since 2022 — and CNY 960M+ in FY2025 alone — as gold prices surged well beyond hedge strike levels.
Valuation
Method: Normalised P/E Multiple + Scenario Analysis
Mokingran is a profitable operating company (positive gross profit) whose GAAP earnings are severely distorted by mark-to-market losses on gold financial instruments. A DCF is unreliable given earnings volatility. The appropriate lens is normalised P/E — estimating operating-business earnings under different gold-hedging loss regimes — benchmarked against the sector.
The swing variable is the Au(T+D) + gold loan loss, which depends entirely on gold price trajectory. We model three scenarios:
- Bull — Gold prices fall materially; losses normalise to ~CNY 300M. Gross profit grows to CNY 1.8B as revenue scales. After operating expenses (~CNY 900M including finance costs), pre-tax profit ~CNY 600M, after-tax ~CNY 450M. EPS ~CNY 1.65/share. At 10× P/E, fair value ≈ CNY 16.5 → HKD 18.2.
- Base — Gold stabilises; losses return to 2024 level (~CNY 627M). Gross profit ~CNY 1.7B. After OpEx/finance (~CNY 800M) and losses, pre-tax ~CNY 270M, after-tax ~CNY 200M. EPS ~CNY 0.73/share. At 8× (conservative sector mid), fair value ≈ CNY 5.8 → HKD 6.4.
- Bear — Gold remains elevated; losses escalate to CNY 1.1B+. Near-zero or negative GAAP earnings. At floor 0.3× P/B (~HKD 3.5 estimate), fair value ≈ HKD 3–4.
| Scenario | Au(T+D) Loss (CNY) | EPS (CNY) | P/E Applied | Fair Value (HKD) | Weight | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bull — Gold Falls | 300M | 1.65 | 10× | 18.2 | 25% | 4.6 |
| Base — Gold Stable | 627M | 0.73 | 8× | 6.4 | 45% | 2.9 |
| Bear — Gold Elevated | 1,100M+ | ~0 | P/B floor | 3.5 | 30% | 1.1 |
| Probability-Weighted Fair Value | ~HKD 8.6 | |||||
Reverse Read
At HKD 12.01 and applying a conservative 10× sector P/E, the market is pricing in EPS of ~CNY 1.10/share (total profit ~CNY 300M). This requires Au(T+D) losses to fall from ~CNY 960M (2025) to ~CNY 500M — roughly halved — with no improvement in gold prices. That is an optimistic assumption given gold remains near multi-year highs.
Peer Comparison Table
All prices as of 16 June 2026 sourced from Google Finance/Yahoo Finance.
| Company | Ticker | P/E (trailing) | P/B | Gross Margin | Net Margin | Revenue Scale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chow Tai Fook | 1929.HK | 14.2× | 4.1× | ~31% | ~5% | ~HKD 100B+ |
| Luk Fook Holdings | 0590.HK | 10.3× | 0.97× | ~25% | ~3% | ~HKD 8B |
| Chow Sang Sang | 0116.HK | 4.1× | 0.47× | ~28% | ~3% | ~HKD 10B |
| Mokingran (this co.) | 2585.HK | 29.2× | ~est. 0.7× | 7.6% | 0.47% | CNY 20.7B |
Mokingran's 29× P/E reflects suppressed earnings — not premium quality. Its gross margins are a fraction of peers because 97% of revenue is pass-through gold. Even normalising earnings, a 14× premium (Chow Tai Fook level) is unwarranted given inferior margins, brand positioning, and structural hedging risk.
Conclusion & Rating
The insider signal is authentic — Wang Zegang spent ~6× his annual salary buying H-shares at HKD 12.33. As executive director and Vice GM, he knows the business. His purchase may reflect confidence that Au(T+D) losses will normalise, or that the Shenzhen E-Commerce disposal (March 2026) and overseas expansion point to improving cash quality. That conviction deserves respect.
However, the math does not support the current price. At HKD 12, investors are paying 29× depressed earnings — more than double Luk Fook and seven times Chow Sang Sang. Even in the bull scenario (gold falls sharply, earnings recover to CNY 1.65/share), the stock is only marginally cheap at HKD 18 implied vs ~HKD 12 current. The base and bear scenarios imply 33–67% downside. The structural problem — a business model that is short gold when gold is in a multi-year bull market — has cost shareholders CNY 1.2B+ in cumulative hedging losses since 2022 and shows no sign of resolution.
Key Risks
- Gold price trajectory (primary risk): If gold prices continue rising, Au(T+D) and gold loan losses will escalate further, potentially wiping out all earnings. Conversely, a gold price correction is the single biggest catalyst for stock re-rating.
- Earnings quality: Payout ratio of 84% on already-compressed earnings is unsustainable. Risk of dividend cut if FY2026 results disappoint.
- Leverage: D/E of 84.4% with debt not well-covered by operating cash flow (OCF coverage 3.8%). Gold loan rollover risk if credit conditions tighten.
- Business model concentration: 97% pure-gold revenue leaves no pricing power; margins depend on scale, not brand premium.
- H/A share discount: H-shares typically trade at discount to A-shares. Any forced selling or A-share underperformance could widen that gap.
- Execution on brand upgrade: The company is pivoting toward higher-value products and e-commerce direct sales. Execution risk is real; progress to date modest.
